CBD & birth control: What is the relationship between cannabidiol and contraceptives?

Currently, it is believed that an interaction between CBD and contraceptives is unlikely. Studies and field reports have not shown that contraceptive protection is reduced when
taken in combination. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when using it.

Antibiotics, painkillers or laxatives can negatively affect the effectiveness of birth control.

But does this also apply to CBD? Many women use the cannabinoids in the cannabis plant to maintain or increase their health, especially before and during menstruation.

The most important facts about CBD and birth control:

Certain active ingredients in CBD and in birth control are metabolized with the same enzymes. The high concentration of CBD may slow down the breakdown of the drug.
It is recommended to wait 2 to 3 hours between taking birth control pills and CBD.
When administering, please follow the consumption recommendations indicated on the
product.

If vomiting or diarrhea occurs within three to four hours of taking the pill, pregnancy cannot be prevented because the active ingredients of the birth control cannot be
absorbed.
CBD can certainly help with the typical side effects. We recommend that you consult your gynecologist.

Does CBD affect the effectiveness of birth control?

In principle, it is unlikely that CBD influences the contraceptive protection. In general, CBD is said to have a positive effect on the hormonal system and reduce the side effects
from birth control. The additional intake (of oil, for example) can relieve menstrual cramps.

But even though CBD is not listed on the birth control’s package insert, cannabinoids can interact with certain active ingredients and affect the contraceptive’s metabolism time – thus reducing its effectiveness.

Even if it’s minor: Interaction is possible

Like some other drugs, CBD is metabolized in the liver. In high doses, CBD can temporarily inhibit the activity of liver enzymes. In this way, other drugs may be metabolized more slowly and their effects, including side effects, may be enhanced.

Will CBD cancel out the effects of birth control pills?

Whether there is an interaction between CBD and birth control pills depends on the CBD dosage, when it is taken, and the type of the pill. Generally, a moderate CBD dose has no side effects unless vomiting or diarrhea occurs. Therefore, it is currently considered unlikely to interact. CBD is more likely to have a positive effect on female hormone
balance.

Taking CBD and birth control pills: what to watch out for

According to current research, there is no known interaction between CBD and birth control pills. Likewise, there are no empirical reports showing that CBD weakens
contraceptive protection. Nevertheless, it is recommended to discuss combined use with your gynecologist and to maintain a certain distance between CBD and birth control pills.
Please note that vomiting or diarrhea will affect the absorption of the pill. Please follow the consumer instructions on the product when using it.
